Spring bird watching in Detroit Lakes has long been a tradition. Visitors come from all over Minnesota and the Midwest to join Detroit Lakes natives and enjoy the unique spectrum of bird species that can be found in the area.
Because Detroit Lakes is located in the transition zone of tall grass prairie, northern hardwood and conifer ecosystems many varieties of birds can be found here - some are found only in the spring as they migrate from winter locations to their summer homes. At the 2004 festival, bird watchers reported seeing 160 species.
Five Lakes Resort offers bird watchers cabin accommodations in a wooded setting on a private lake. No gasoline motors are allowed on Lake Five, making for a tranquil getaway.
